With exercise becoming more popular within society in the new millennium training outdoors away from the gym is seen as a viable option for many. There is good reason for this, with many bike paths and running routes at the public’s disposal. However, one aspect that needs to be considered is an individual’s safety whilst outdoors. Being in a vulnerable environment of seclusion may encourage deviants to take those nice new pair of running shoes, or worse. Here are some are some simple strategies to keep you safe whilst training outdoors:
Tell someone where you are going
Before heading out outdoors to train make a note to let the family or friends of your household know where you are going and how long you expect to be. If you are not home well beyond the expected time it will raise an alarm of concern.
Training partner
Not only will a training partner provide and extra source of motivation, they will also be a deterrent for anyone considering disrupting your safety.
Carry a mobile phone
Most people will have mobile phones is this day and age, however many would not consider taking it with them while going outdoors for exercise. Modern phones and small in size and lightweight, and this could be a vital tool if something unexpected were to occur. However it is advised that you have the phone turned off whilst training as you don’t want phone calls disrupting your training focus.
Train during daylight
Although much easier to do so in the summer months, training whilst still daylight is a positive step towards reducing the risk of a disturbance to your safety. In broad daylight deviants will be far less likely to take a course of action.
Learn self defence
By learning a form of self defence, whether is be a martial art or boxing, it will enable you to take a proactive step towards protecting your safety in a potentially dangerous situation. Self defence disciplines are also a fantastic fitness workout.
Take a look at your fitness training schedule and see if it is required that you include the above advice to maintain your safety. Fitness training outdoors is certainly a fantastic option and it would be a shame to be deterred from doing so.
