Roy Jones Jr. is recognised as one of the most gifted athletes ever to lace on the boxing gloves. Jones holds the desirable record of being the first middleweight fighter to move up and win the Heavyweight Championship of the World.

After a stellar amateur career which included a controversial silver medal at the 1988 Soul Olympics, Jones peeled off 21 straight victories before fighting and defeating future legend Bernard Hopkins to win his first title; IBF Middleweight Championship of the World. Jones went onto defeat at the time pound for pound number one James Toney to win the IBF Super-Middleweight title in what many saw as his arrival as a boxing super star.

Jones continued his rise up the weights searching for more formidable competition in the face of criticism of his willingness to do so. At light-heavyweight Jones captured the WBC title by defeating Mike McCallum, then losing it by way of disqualification to Montell Griffin after striking the opponent whilst his knee was on the canvas, not before dominating Griffin for nine rounds. Jones squashed any doubts as to who was the superior fighter by knocking Griffin out in the first round of the return bout to recapture the WBC belt. Jones went onto fight and defeat formidable opponents at 175 pounds in Virgil Hill, Lou Del Valle and Reggie Johnson, whilst also capturing the IBF and WBA title at this weight to become the undisputed champion.

In 2003 Jones defeated John Ruiz to win the WBA Heavyweight Championship of the World. Jones was the first boxer in over 100 years to move from middleweight to heavyweight and win the championship, a record which stamped his legacy as an all time great.

In the later stages of his boxing career Jones moved back down to Light-Heavyweight where he regained titles, but suffered back-to-back losses to Antonio Tarver and Glen Johnson, which saw the end of his reign as the world’s premier fighter. Jones did make a comeback after these loses with three straight victories including the scalp of fellow legend Felix Trinidad, however also suffered a loss against undefeated Welshman Joe Calzaghe.

Apart from being a fighter Roy Jones Jr. has achieved success as a boxing promoter through his company Square Ring Inc. and as a recording artist with his hip-hop label Body Head Entertainment. Jones has additionally played professional basketball, and was at one stage rumoured through the media to quit boxing to play in the NBA.  To prove his athletic abilities Jones once played a game of basketball the same day as defending his boxing world title.

Roy Jones Jr. is known and remembered for his great athleticism and flamboyance in the ring, and his inconsistent and mysterious attitude outside.
